School Culture

School Culture

At Marcus Whitman Middle School, school culture is more than a set of expectations — it is the shared commitment that connects students, staff, and families. We believe students learn best when they feel safe, respected, connected, and challenged.

Our culture is built upon the ELITE Way and our commitment to ensuring every student is known, valued, and challenged.

The ELITE Way

Effort Students and staff embrace challenges and persist through difficulty, demonstrate a growth mindset, complete tasks with purpose and determination, set goals and work diligently to achieve them, and strive for continuous improvement.

Leadership Students and staff lead learning through participation and engagement, model positive academic habits, contribute to a productive learning environment, inspire others through their actions and character, and take initiative to solve problems and improve our community.

Integrity Students and staff demonstrate honesty in academic and personal pursuits, take responsibility for actions and learning, follow through on commitments, make ethical decisions, and show respect for themselves, others, and the learning environment.

Trust Students and staff build positive relationships through honesty and reliability, create classrooms where all learners feel safe to take academic risks, work collaboratively to achieve shared goals, and demonstrate consistency between words and actions.

Empathy Students and staff value diverse perspectives and experiences, listen actively and seek understanding, support peers in their academic and personal growth, and foster an inclusive environment where everyone belongs.

CharacterStrong & Advisory

CharacterStrong and Advisory provide students with opportunities to build character, strengthen relationships, develop leadership skills, and practice social-emotional competencies that support success in school and life. Students engage in learning focused on self-awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, goal setting, empathy and belonging, and perseverance and resilience.

ELITE Culture, Behavior, and Support Framework

Marcus Whitman utilizes our ELITE Culture, Behavior, and Support Framework to establish clear expectations and create a positive learning environment. Students are explicitly taught expectations, recognized for demonstrating ELITE values, and supported through restorative practices that strengthen relationships and accountability.

Celebrating Trailblazers

We believe student growth and positive contributions deserve recognition. Throughout the year, students may be recognized through Trailblazer of the Week, Trailblazer of the Month, ELITE Honors Celebrations, Academic Achievement Recognition, Attendance Recognition, and Leadership Opportunities. These celebrations reinforce our values and highlight the many ways students contribute to our school community.

Belonging at MWMS

We are committed to creating a school where every student feels welcomed, valued, respected, and supported. Our goal is that every student has trusted adults at school, feels connected to peers and activities, experiences a sense of belonging, sees their strengths recognized, and has opportunities to lead and contribute. When students know they belong, they are more likely to engage, achieve, and thrive.
